Azerbaijan women’s national team head coach Siyasat Asgarov said Latvia and Georgia would be the team’s main rivals in Group 2 of League C of the UEFA Women’s Nations League. Liechtenstein is also in the group.
Asgarov said the team had waited a long time to learn its opponents and that the draw was important for them. Azerbaijan have previously played friendlies against Latvia and Georgia and have also faced Georgia in an official match. The teams have not met in friendlies in recent years. Both games against Latvia three years ago ended in draws. Liechtenstein will be Azerbaijan’s first-time opponent.
Opponents’ strength and preparations
In the coach’s view, Latvia and Georgia have made their mark in women’s football in recent years. Asgarov said the teams were closely matched and that the group would feature tough, competitive games. He added that Liechtenstein were also a developing team and would compete for points.
Asgarov stressed the importance of preparing carefully, minimizing mistakes and forcing opponents into errors to achieve the desired results. He said most of the players compete for various clubs abroad, adding that it would be an advantage if they joined the training camp injury-free, healthy, in good physical condition and with match experience.
Azerbaijan are waiting for the fixture schedule to be announced and will plan their preparations accordingly. The first round in Group 2 of League C is scheduled to begin on February 23, 2027.
