What the numbers mean

Buy and sell are the bank's side, not yours

The "buy" column is what the bank pays you for one unit; the "sell" column is what it charges you for one. Handing currency over, look for the highest buy; buying it, the lowest sell.

Cash and non-cash are different prices

A cash rate applies at the counter. A non-cash rate applies to a card payment, a transfer or a conversion in the bank app, and it is often the better of the two — which is why they are separate here.

Why do the banks' rates differ?

Each bank sets its own rate and keeps the gap between buy and sell — the spread — as its margin. The smaller the spread, the less the bank keeps.

What is the Central Bank rate for?

The official rate is not a price anyone trades at. It is the reference the Central Bank publishes each working day for accounting, customs and contracts.

About the manat

Code and sign

The Azerbaijani manat is AZN in the ISO 4217 list (numeric code 944). Its sign is ₼, adopted by the Central Bank in 2013 and added to Unicode in 2014.

100 qapiks to the manat

One manat is 100 qapiks (qəpik in Azerbaijani), so amounts have two decimal places. The current manat replaced the old one on 1 January 2006 at 1 to 5,000.

About 1.70 per US dollar since 2017

The Central Bank of Azerbaijan's official dollar rate was 1.7025 on 1 May 2017, 1.7001 on 1 January 2018 and has read 1.7000 on the bulletins we checked since June 2018. Banks trade around it with a spread.

Where the rate comes from

The official rate is published by the Central Bank each working day. The bank rates above are what the counters pay and charge.
