Percentage formulas

  • Percent of a numberpercent amount = number × percent ÷ 100
  • What percentpercent = part ÷ whole × 100
  • Increase / decreasechange, % = (new − original) ÷ original × 100
  • Add / take off %result = number × (1 ± percent ÷ 100)
  • Find the originaloriginal = final ÷ (1 ± percent ÷ 100)

What a percent is

A percent is one hundredth: 1% = 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01. So to take 25% of a number it is enough to multiply it by 0.25.

Adding or taking off a percentage means multiplying by (1 ± percent ÷ 100). Going back means dividing, because a percentage is always taken of the original number.

The calculator accepts both a comma (12,5) and a dot (12.5) as the decimal mark.

Frequently asked questions

How do you find a percent of a number?

Multiply the number by the percent and divide by 100: 15% of 200 is 30.

What percent is one number of another?

Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100: 30 is 15% of 200.

How is a percent increase or decrease calculated?

Divide the difference between the new and the original value by the original value and multiply by 100. For example, a change from 80 to 100 is an increase of 25%. For a decrease the same formula gives a negative result.

How do you add or take off a percentage?

Multiply the number by (1 + percent ÷ 100), or by (1 − percent ÷ 100) to take it off. For example, adding 18% to 100 gives 118. The percent in the example is only an illustration: type your own rate.

How do you find the original amount from the amount after a percentage?

Divide the amount by (1 + percent ÷ 100), or by (1 − percent ÷ 100) if the percent was taken off. For example, a number that is 118 after adding 18% was 100 before.

Why does adding a percentage and taking off the same percentage not give back the original?

Because the second percentage is taken of the larger number: adding 18% to 100 gives 118, and taking 18% off that 118 gives 96.76.

Can I type a number with a comma?

Yes: 12,5 and 12.5 are both accepted and spaces are ignored. When both a comma and a dot appear, the last one is the decimal mark.
