Good to know

What is the Kp index?

A 0–9 measure of how disturbed Earth’s magnetic field is worldwide, given for each 3-hour block in steps of a third (4.67 is “5-”). Kp 5 and above counts as a magnetic storm.

What do G1–G5 mean?

NOAA’s storm scale: G1 is Kp 5, G5 is Kp 9. We round Kp to the nearest whole number first, so 4.67 counts as G1 and 4.33 is not yet a storm.

Do storms affect how people feel?

The scientific evidence that magnetic storms affect how people feel is weak and inconsistent: some studies find a small link, others find none, and no mechanism is confirmed. This page is not medical advice; if you feel unwell, do not assume the storm is the cause, and see a doctor.

Do they affect technology?

Strong storms (G3 and above) can affect satellite navigation, HF radio and satellites. At G1–G2 daily life usually goes on unnoticed.

Can the aurora be seen in Azerbaijan?

The aurora is normally seen at high latitudes. At southern latitudes like Azerbaijan’s it is possible only in the strongest storms.

Where does the data come from?

The planetary Kp forecast of the US NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), public domain. The file is read once an hour; the next three days are a forecast and can change. Source: NOAA SWPC
