U.S. President Donald Trump highlighted the fact that his name was not on the ballot in his first official post on the preliminary results of the congressional midterm elections. He said that if he had been a candidate, they would have won by a large margin.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports that many candidates Trump personally backed in the midterm elections faced strong opposition, and most failed to win seats.
White House officials said the candidates themselves, rather than the president, were responsible for the losses. An unnamed White House official said Trump had campaigned more actively and effectively to promote the candidates than they had themselves.
In an interview with The New York Times assessing the election results, Donald Trump said he was prepared to accept the picture of Democrats in the lead. “I look forward to working with them. We’ll probably find a way to work together,” he said.
According to unofficial results from the Associated Press (AP), Democrats had won 103 seats in the House of Representatives and Republicans 61, as vote counting continued in some states.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) retained their seats. Two seats previously held by Republicans also changed hands in favor of Democrats.
A majority in the House of Representatives requires at least 218 seats. All 435 seats in the lower chamber and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats are being contested in the elections.
