Trump addresses Iran, border and economy at GOP convention

US President Donald Trump addressed the Republican Party’s two-day national convention held in Dallas, Texas.

The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Trump focused primarily on domestic policy, border security and the economy. He defended his administration’s record, saying important steps had been taken during his presidency and that the United States had been put in a better position.

Trump claimed that the United States had faced political and economic difficulties during Joe Biden’s presidency and said the country had recovered under his leadership.

He said an “open border” policy had been implemented in the United States and that he had stopped it after taking office. Trump claimed that illegal migrant crossings at the border had fallen to zero in recent months.

Referring to Democrats as “left-wing communists,” Trump urged voters to support all Republican candidates in the congressional midterm elections scheduled for Nov. 3.

Speaking about Iran, Trump said the United States had gone to war to prevent the country from obtaining nuclear weapons and that “we won this war.”

Trump said oil prices would fall if the ongoing war ended in victory. Claiming that the United States controlled trade in the Strait of Hormuz, he suggested renaming it the “Trump Strait.”

Trump said the United States had intervened in Venezuela and established significant control over the country, while praising an oil agreement reached with the authorities in Caracas.

According to him, the agreement made a significant contribution to the US economy and allowed gasoline prices to be kept at a certain level despite the crisis related to Iran.

National conventions, traditionally held in the year of presidential elections to formally announce parties’ presidential nominees, play an important role in the US political system. Following Trump’s call in June, the Republican Party decided to hold its national convention before the congressional midterm elections. This is considered the first such instance in terms of the convention’s timing.

The US president said the convention was important for uniting the Republican electorate ahead of the midterm elections.
