US singer Chris Brown has been sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months, over an incident at a nightclub in London’s Mayfair district on Feb. 19, 2023, Anadolu Agency reported.
Brown, 37, pleaded guilty in July to affray in connection with the incident. Music producer Abe Diaw sustained head and knee injuries that required hospital treatment.
Under UK law, affray is a public order offence involving the use or threat of violence in public. The conduct must be sufficiently frightening to make an ordinary bystander fear for their safety.
Closed-circuit television footage showed Brown striking Diaw on the head with a glass bottle. Judge Tony Baumgartner said on Monday that the repeated use of the bottle was “plainly dangerous”.
The judge acknowledged that the incident was short, but described it as “intense”. Brown’s defence lawyers had called it “ugly and unattractive” and argued that it was “very short-lived”.
Brown’s vocal coach, Florida rapper Omololu Akinlolu, 40, also pleaded guilty to affray and is being sentenced in connection with the case.
