Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide responded to US President Donald Trump’s harsh criticism of the Kingdom of Norway and his claims about the Nobel Peace Prize at an election rally in Michigan.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports that, in an interview with Norwegian broadcaster NRK, the foreign minister reiterated that the Nobel Committee operates entirely independently of Oslo’s political leadership and government.
Responding to the US president’s dissatisfaction, Eide said:
“The US president knows very well that the Nobel Committee is an independent body, separate from the government. For those interested, we have brought this legal and institutional arrangement to his attention several times. The legal situation has not changed, and the committee continues to make its decisions independently.”
Trump blamed Norway for not awarding him the Nobel Peace Prize and used harsh language about Oslo while speaking at an election rally in Michigan. In previous remarks, he has said he deserved the prize, claiming to have mediated the resolution of several military conflicts. He has also made rhetorical statements questioning migration from Scandinavian countries to the United States.
