Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday that resuming trilateral talks between the United States, Russia and Ukraine over the Moscow-Kyiv conflict would not impose any restrictions on military operations, Anadolu Agency reported.

Speaking at a news briefing in Moscow, Peskov said territorial issues could be discussed as part of efforts to reach a peaceful settlement, alongside other matters.

“The decision to resume trilateral negotiations does not imply any restrictions on military actions. You know that our armed forces continue the ‘special military operation’ and continue to deliver massive and consistent strikes on Ukraine’s military complex, on military and quasi-military targets,” he said.

Peskov said the talks would involve many details, adding that Moscow did not want to discuss them publicly because it believed doing so could harm the potential future peace process.

On humanitarian efforts, he said they could set a precedent and cited the “very positive, coordinating involvement” of US negotiators and first lady Melania Trump. Moscow highly appreciated those efforts, he said, adding that it hoped Ukraine would fulfil all agreements reached with the direct participation of negotiators.

Peskov comments on elections in Serbia and Brazil

Commenting on Serbia’s snap parliamentary election, Peskov said Moscow highly valued Aleksandar Vucic’s contribution to bilateral relations and expected him to remain on the political stage.

“Even in opposition, he will still contribute to the development of bilateral relations,” Peskov said. He expressed hope that the new political force coming to power would act constructively and understand that cooperation with Russia was in Serbia’s interest.

Moscow intended to continue promoting relations with Belgrade, he added, saying: “But, as you know, it takes two to tango.”

Serbia held an early election to the National Assembly on Sunday. With 96.47% of ballots counted, the Republican Electoral Commission said Vucic’s “United Serbia” list was trailing the opposition “Student List”, with 39.27% against 52.57% of the vote.

Peskov also welcomed Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s victory in Brazil’s presidential election. Russian President Vladimir Putin had earlier sent congratulations to Lula.

Russia to host 2030 weightlifting championships

Peskov welcomed the International Weightlifting Federation’s decision to hold the 2030 championships in Moscow, describing it as an important step towards depoliticising sport.

“Russia must return to the world sports family with full rights, because this family cannot live fully without Russia’s participation,” he said.

Asked about the Olympics, Peskov said it was too early to discuss the matter. He said that not many countries were currently interested in hosting the Games and that the pros and cons needed to be weighed. “For now, this issue is not on the agenda,” he said.
