U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has assessed the current situation surrounding the settlement of the Ukraine conflict, saying there are currently no realistic prospects for the parties to achieve peace through negotiations. The Greek newspaper Kathimerini published his remarks.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Rubio said Washington is following the risk of escalation in the conflict with great concern, but remains ready to play a mediating role in efforts to reach a diplomatic settlement:
“At present, there appears to be no prospect of a negotiated settlement. Nevertheless, we are ready to play any constructive role possible to achieve that goal.”
In a statement on October 6, the U.S. secretary of state also said the White House’s main priority was to bring the conflict in Ukraine to an end as soon as possible, but noted that the current dynamics on the front line were not moving toward resolving the crisis.
On October 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed gratitude to the U.S. leadership for its efforts and mediation initiatives aimed at a diplomatic resolution of the Ukraine conflict.
