Village egg prices are rising in Azerbaijan.
“Operative Information Center-OMM”, citing Xəzər Xəbər, reports that village eggs which previously sold for 25-30 gapiks in Baku markets now cost 40 gapiks.
Sellers say the increase has become more noticeable over the past month to six weeks. Village eggs are also reportedly selling for 40 gapiks in Tovuz and Ismayilli.
Sellers: “We cannot sell them for 40 gapiks”
Sellers in Baku say they buy village eggs from rural areas for about 30-35 gapiks and sell them for 40 gapiks after adding a markup.
They say eggs previously cost around 25-30 gapiks. Some sellers say prices have climbed to 40 gapiks during periods when village eggs are in short supply.
Prices have also been rising in Tovuz for about a month and a half. Sellers say they previously bought village eggs for 20-25 gapiks and sold them for 25-30 gapiks, but now pay 35 gapiks and offer them for 40.
Sellers cite a decline in the rate at which village hens lay eggs as one of the main reasons for the increase.
In Ismayilli, sellers say prices have risen in recent days. They say it has become difficult to buy eggs for 35 gapiks and sell them for 40.
“They have gone up to 40 gapiks, and we cannot sell them,” one seller said.
Expert explains the reason
Murvat Hasanli, chairman of the Azerbaijan Poultry Meat, Egg Producers and Exporters Association Public Union, attributed the increase in village egg prices to higher demand and seasonal factors.
He said village hens produce about 380,000-400,000 eggs a day during the summer. From autumn into winter, that figure falls to about 80,000 a day.
Hasanli said prices rise as production declines while demand remains.
He added that further cooling weather could lead to another increase in village egg prices.
Farm eggs are cheaper
Eggs from broiler or farm-raised hens are offered at lower prices than village eggs. They currently reportedly sell for between 10 and 20 gapiks.
The price difference between village and farm eggs is therefore as much as 20 gapiks.
