La Liga president Javier Tebas has issued an official statement over comments by Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe that prompted a negative reaction in China.
Speaking on behalf of La Liga, Tebas said the organization regretted that Mbappe’s words had caused discontent and offense in China. He said La Liga understood the harm caused and offered a sincere apology to the Chinese people.
“For many years, we have built relations with China — its authorities, sports organizations, broadcasters and millions of fans of Spanish football — based on respect, trust and cooperation,” Tebas said in a statement published on the social media platform X.
The La Liga president said the organization had no intention of allowing relations to deteriorate or of harming more than 20 clubs competing in its professional tournaments, as well as millions of Chinese fans. He said every possible measure was being taken to resolve the situation and that La Liga was in direct contact with its partners and representatives in China.
Tebas stressed that La Liga’s commitment to China, its people and its institutions remained unchanged. He said a single incident should not undermine the relationships built over the years.
