Fourth-tier English side Fleetwood knocked Arsenal out of the League Cup in the round of 16. The match at Highbury Stadium in Fleetwood ended 1-1 after regular time, with the hosts winning the penalty shootout 5-3.
Fleetwood head coach Matt Lawlor said his players had not practised taking penalties. The team had made no special preparations for a shootout, he said, and the players handled the situation themselves.
Lawlor noted that the final penalty was taken by the team’s 19-year-old centre-back. The coach said the player looked a little nervous as he stepped up, but that Connor appeared confident. Lawlor said he was pleased the match had gone to penalties, adding that the result thereafter depended on how the shootout unfolded.
Fleetwood took the lead through Loupalo-Bi in the 21st minute. Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres equalised in the 50th minute. Arsenal’s Doumen was sent off in the 85th minute.
