Former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has spoken about Manchester City’s alleged breaches of financial rules. He said Jose Mourinho also took note of the club’s expensive transfers while he was working at Manchester United.
Herrera said that when he lived in Manchester, his friends could not get tickets to Old Trafford while tickets to the Etihad Stadium were being handed out for free. He praised the players and coach for Manchester City’s success, but said the damage caused by the club’s actions was irreversible.
The Spanish footballer believes the punishment should be severe and set a precedent. Herrera recalled that Tottenham finished fifth for three consecutive years without qualifying for the Champions League, calling it a major financial loss. He also said he could have won the Premier League title if the alleged rule breaches had not occurred.
Speaking to AS, Herrera compared Mourinho to the animated series “The Simpsons”: he said the Portuguese coach’s predictions later came true. Mourinho said at the time that what was happening amounted to winning the title and stressed that something strange was going on behind the scenes.
Manchester City has been found guilty on 114 of 115 charges relating to the inaccurate reporting of financial information, payments to players and coaches, and failure to comply with financial control requirements.
