Van Gaal says Man City breaches may have affected his United exit

Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes Manchester City’s breaches of financial rules may have influenced his departure from the English club in 2016.

Van Gaal said that failing to qualify for the Champions League that year may have been decisive in his dismissal from Manchester United and in what followed. He said he could not change history, and neither could the English Football Association.

Manchester City was found guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules between 2009 and 2018. In the 2015-16 season, the team finished fourth, ahead of Manchester United on additional criteria after the clubs finished level on points.

Van Gaal said a judge should decide what action should be taken against Manchester City. The Athletic reported his comments.
