Strong north-westerly winds are currently affecting Baku and the Absheron Peninsula, causing significant disruptions across the region.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the National Hydrometeorological Service reported as of 13:00 on July 27 that wind speeds have reached a maximum of 28 meters per second (m/s), consistent with an orange weather warning. Marine conditions have also deteriorated, with wave heights in the Caspian Sea reaching 2.8 meters.
Earlier in the day, at 10:00, the National Hydrometeorological Service noted that while weather conditions across Azerbaijan remained largely dry, strong north-westerly winds were recorded in several regions. In addition to the 28 m/s speeds in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula, high wind speeds were reported in Mingachevir (23 m/s), Naftalan (22 m/s), Khachmaz and Ganja (20 m/s), Goranboy (19 m/s), and Shabran (16 m/s).
The Absheron Peninsula, which includes the capital city of Baku, is frequently subject to strong winds, locally known as the 'Khazri' wind, which blows from the north. The National Hydrometeorological Service regularly issues such warnings to ensure public safety and to alert maritime and transport sectors to potential hazards caused by extreme meteorological events.
