Los Angeles City Council member Nithya Raman, backed by the Democratic Socialists of America, has defeated Mayor Karen Bass, Anadolu Agency reported.
“Los Angeles, I’m deeply honored to be your next mayor,” Raman said in a video statement posted on “X”.
Raman paid tribute to Bass, saying she had served Los Angeles for many decades and that people across the city and the country were grateful for her dedication to the promise of Los Angeles.
She pledged to build affordable housing, provide more parks and establish a working transit system, as well as a city government “that is actually capable of delivering on its promises.”
Bass said in a statement that she had called Raman to congratulate her and promised a “smooth and seamless transition”. “The people of Los Angeles have spoken,” she said.
In her election night speech, Raman said Los Angeles had ceased to be a place where people could build, open, film and create things. She pledged to restore an ambitious and entrepreneurial city.
Bass is the first Los Angeles mayor in two decades to lose a re-election bid.
Following Zohran Mamdani’s election as New York mayor a year ago, Raman’s victory on Tuesday puts the two most populous cities in the United States under the leadership of democratic socialists.
