Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul won re-election as New York governor on Tuesday, defeating Republican Bruce A. Blakeman, Anadolu Agency reported, citing the Associated Press.
The result ended Republican hopes of a closer contest against the incumbent, who took office in 2021 after Andrew Cuomo resigned amid sexual harassment allegations.
Hochul won her first full term in 2022 by a narrow margin over Republican Lee Zeldin.
During the campaign, Hochul highlighted her clashes with the Trump administration, criticised Blakeman’s support for the president and pledged to reduce living costs while investing in education.
Blakeman, the Nassau County executive, portrayed Hochul as out of touch, arguing that her policies had made New York less safe and affordable. He also criticised her support for Manhattan’s congestion pricing programme and her ties to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
President Donald Trump endorsed Blakeman and called Hochul “a nightmare for crime” at an August event on Long Island. Trump later campaigned with Blakeman in Syracuse in October.
