The high-level General Debate of the UN General Assembly is set to open on Tuesday in New York under the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that delivers for all.”
Heads of state and government will attend the 81st edition of the gathering to discuss major international security, geopolitical and economic issues, according to the United Nations.
World leaders scheduled to address the assembly
The proceedings will begin in the General Assembly Hall, following the long-standing diplomatic tradition of Brazil’s president delivering the opening address, followed by the leader of the host country, US President Donald Trump.
The opening morning programme includes Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani, Jordan’s King Abdullah II and Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov.
Later, the assembly is scheduled to hear from Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori, Chilean President Jose Antonio Kast, French President Emmanuel Macron, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg and Angolan President Joao Lourenco.
Debate to continue through September
The UN General Assembly session formally began on September 8. The main General Debate will continue until September 26 and conclude with final addresses on September 28.
