US President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani met at Gracie Mansion on Monday, discussing housing, living costs and other issues facing the city as Trump visited New York for the United Nations General Assembly.
The meeting was the third face-to-face encounter between the two politicians and their first in New York, according to the source report. Their earlier meetings took place at the White House, including one in February that focused partly on housing development.
Housing project takes centre stage
Mamdani said the discussions covered ways to reduce living costs for New Yorkers and expand housing construction. A central issue was the proposed redevelopment of Sunnyside Yards in Queens, a major rail-yard project that he said could create about 12,000 homes and 30,000 jobs.
City Hall and the White House agreed to establish closer coordination between their housing and operations teams on the project, Mamdani said.
Trump said Sunnyside Yards had been under discussion for decades and would probably require federal approvals and funding. He added that a significant share of any development should be allocated to low- and moderate-income housing.
Meeting held during UN-related visit
The talks came as Trump was in New York for diplomatic engagements linked to the UN General Assembly. He is scheduled to address the assembly on Tuesday and is expected to meet several foreign leaders during the visit.
At a news conference after the meeting, Trump said he hoped Mamdani would become a “great mayor”, despite their significant political differences. Mamdani said New Yorkers would ultimately judge his performance.

Trump also responded to questions about restrictions imposed on several news organisations’ access to the White House, saying he believed the outlets had an obligation to report fairly.
Mamdani said he supported the presence of members of the press at Gracie Mansion regardless of their views or criticism.
