German tennis player and world No. 1 Alexander Zverev has responded to criticism from compatriot Boris Becker, a six-time Grand Slam champion.
Becker had previously discussed why Zverev was not sufficiently popular in Germany, saying his parents were from Russia, that he communicated with his team in Russian during matches and that he had not commented on the conflict in Ukraine. Becker also criticized the way Zverev interacted with German journalists and stressed that the tennis player should be more open with fans.
After losing to Lorenzo Musetti at the Paris Masters, Zverev responded to his compatriot’s remarks. He said Becker usually talked a lot of nonsense and gave the impression that he was trying to comment on everything Zverev did.
Zverev called it strange that Becker thought he should disclose his political views: “My position on this issue is completely clear. I have never been asked about it. I have no intention of going on social media and posting comments. That is not my style. I have never done that, and I do not plan to.”
