Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defense Directorate issued a second warning on Saturday over a possible threat in Riyadh and the eastern city of Al-Kharj. The agency later said there was no cause for public concern and that the danger had passed.
The warnings came as the Iran-allied Houthis, who operate in Yemen, have increased attacks on Saudi Arabia. They were the first alerts issued for the capital after the Houthis intensified attacks from neighboring Yemen.
The Houthi military spokesperson said several hours earlier that “criminal attempts,” without providing further details, had been thwarted in Yemen’s capital, Sana’a. He alleged that Saudi Arabia was behind the attempts and said a response would follow. Saudi government media officials did not immediately comment on the statement.
The UN Security Council condemned Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, including strikes on civilian and energy infrastructure. Civilians, including women and children, were reported to have been wounded in the attacks.
In a statement adopted on Aug. 7, council members reiterated their condemnation of missile attacks on Saudi Arabia and attacks against commercial vessels. They also condemned the continued threats to shipping in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, stressing the importance of protecting the safety of ships and their crews.
The Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb are strategically important waterways for global trade, connecting the Indian Ocean with the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal. Security threats in the area can disrupt commercial shipping and affect regional stability.
