US Vice President JD Vance has sent a letter to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports that Axios published the information, citing an unnamed US official.
The letter stressed that Washington must discuss the nuclear issue with Tehran before resuming talks on halting US strikes.
According to the unnamed official, US President Donald Trump responded positively to the letter. The source declined to say when it was sent.
The letter to Rezaei is seen as the highest-level contact between the United States and Iran in recent months. It comes amid reports that Trump is considering resuming large-scale military operations in Iran after the midterm elections.
One of the main obstacles to resuming talks is Iran’s demand that the United States first lift its naval blockade, release frozen Iranian assets and allow oil sales.
The United States, meanwhile, wants Iran to resume negotiations on its nuclear program before any sanctions are lifted.
On October 28, Trump told reporters that Vance’s letter concerned helping deliver essential medical supplies to Iran.
