Democrats are set to take control of the US House of Representatives from Republicans, US media projected on Tuesday, Anadolu Agency reported.
All 435 House seats are being contested in the midterm elections, and a party needs 218 seats to secure a majority.
According to race calls by the Associated Press, Democrats have so far flipped seven seats held by Republicans. The gains were in Kentucky’s 6th District, North Carolina’s 11th District, New Jersey’s 7th District, Ohio’s 15th District and Pennsylvania’s 7th, 8th and 10th districts.
In Ohio, Democrat Don Leonard was elected in the 15th District. In Pennsylvania, Democrats Paige Cognetti and Janelle Stelson won in the 8th and 10th districts, respectively.
Republican Representative Mike Johnson was re-elected in Louisiana’s 4th District.
The projected takeover would give Democrats control of the lower chamber of Congress, increasing the party’s ability to shape the legislative agenda and conduct oversight of the Republican administration during the final two years of President Donald Trump’s term.
Vote counting continues in races across the country.
