Democrat Annie Andrews is projected to have won a South Carolina Senate seat, defeating Republican Darline Graham and giving Democrats their first statewide victory in the state in 28 years, according to the BBC World.
Andrews, a former paediatrician, was on course for an upset in Tuesday’s US midterm elections, CBS reported.
Graham was appointed to the seat in July with President Donald Trump’s backing, following the sudden death of her brother, Senator Lindsey Graham.
The political newcomer acknowledged during the primary campaign that she was “not that informed on national security”. Trump won South Carolina by 18 points in 2024.
Graham had also conceded that she lacked political experience, particularly after stumbling over a foreign-policy question during a recent debate.
Asked about the US position on Taiwan, she said: “National security is not my thing, not my area of expertise, but I do support the military.”
Lindsey Graham was elected to the Senate in 2002 and became one of Washington’s most influential voices on foreign policy, often advocating US military intervention overseas.
