Democrat Rebecca Bennett won New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District on Tuesday, defeating Republican Rep. Thomas H. Kean Jr. and flipping a seat held by Republicans, Anadolu Agency reported.

The Associated Press declared Bennett the winner in the district, which Kean had represented as a Republican.

The victory gives Democrats a seat as they seek to strengthen their position in the House of Representatives.

Vote counting continued across the country in the midterm elections, with results still emerging in races nationwide.

All 435 seats in the House are contested in the midterms. A party needs 218 seats to secure a majority.
