The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has detained 10 foreign nationals for disseminating fake videos on social media platforms created using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the official information was released by the UAE's WAM news agency.

The detainees include citizens of Bangladesh, Vietnam, Egypt, India, Iran, and other countries. UAE Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi has ordered the arrest of these 10 accused individuals representing various nationalities.

According to the reports, the individuals were immediately referred to the judiciary for publishing misleading and fraudulent content on social media. The videos reportedly depicted the deployment of UAE air defense systems, strikes on various facilities, as well as fake explosions and fire footage designed to cause public alarm.

The UAE has recently intensified its legal framework to combat the spread of misinformation and the misuse of AI technology. Under the country's federal laws on combatting rumors and cybercrimes, the production or distribution of fake news that threatens public safety or state security carries severe legal penalties, including heavy fines and imprisonment. This crackdown reflects a broader regional effort to maintain stability and prevent the digital manipulation of public perception through sophisticated deepfake technologies.
