Türkiye has called on Greece to respect the will, human rights and religious freedom of Western Thrace Turks.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports that Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement on the matter.
It said Greece was disregarding the fundamental rights and freedoms guaranteed to the Turkish minority of Western Thrace under the Treaty of Lausanne and international agreements by appointing what it described as “so-called muftis” in Komotini and Xanthi.
“By insisting on not recognizing the muftis chosen by the Turkish minority of Western Thrace, which has official minority status in Greece, the Greek authorities are ignoring the minority’s will and religious freedom and once again demonstrating their distorted approach to fundamental human rights.
“We call on the Greek authorities to recognize the legitimate muftis elected by the minority and to stop trying to impose appointed muftis,” the statement said.
