Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was injured during the English Premier League’s seventh-round match against Everton. The London side won the game 2-0.
Martinez collided with an Everton player while challenging for the ball. Doctors who came onto the pitch treated the Argentine goalkeeper and gave him an oxygen mask. Martinez was carried off the field on a stretcher.
According to journalist Gaston Edul in a post on the social media platform X, Martinez is in hospital and conscious. CT scans of his head, as well as examinations of his back and neck, found no abnormalities. Doctors identified a fracture in the goalkeeper’s jaw. This is why he remains in hospital.
Martinez will need surgery. He joined Chelsea from Aston Villa last summer. The goalkeeper has made six appearances for the London club, conceding 11 goals and keeping one clean sheet.
