Turkey’s next presidential election could be held on April 16, 2028

April 16, 2028, has emerged as a possible date for Turkey’s next presidential and parliamentary elections.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Turkish Presidential Chief Adviser Mehmet Uçum made the remarks in an official statement.

According to the report, Uçum said the proposed date of April 16, 2028, carried symbolic significance because it would coincide with the anniversary of the 2017 referendum that paved the way for Turkey’s transition to a presidential system. The adviser added that, under the Constitution, if the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) decides to hold the next elections early, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan would become eligible to run for office one final time. Such a decision would require the support of at least 360 lawmakers.

Meanwhile, ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) spokesman Ömer Çelik said the party currently had no plan to hold early presidential elections.

Turkey’s presidential and parliamentary elections are normally held simultaneously. The 2017 referendum introduced the presidential system, replacing the previous parliamentary model and expanding the powers of the presidency.
