Vyacheslav Volodin re-elected as Russia’s State Duma speaker

Vyacheslav Volodin was re-elected speaker of Russia’s State Duma at the first session of the ninth convocation.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing TASS.

Volodin received 406 of the 442 deputies’ votes.

Dmitry Novikov, the Communist Party’s candidate, received 36 votes.

Volodin’s candidacy was put forward by the United Russia faction, which holds the majority in the State Duma. The party won the parliamentary elections.

Volodin thanked Russian citizens who actively participated in the elections. He said that voters had supported the deputies despite various threats.

The State Duma speaker also stressed that voters had expressed solidarity with the political course set by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to him, this position had contributed to the country’s achievement of its stated goals.

The State Duma is Russia’s lower house of parliament. Its speaker oversees the chamber’s proceedings and represents it in domestic and international parliamentary relations.
