US President Donald Trump announced on Sept. 19 that a special body called the “AI Force” would be established. He also said an “AI czar” would be appointed soon.
Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform that the new initiative would be modeled on the US Space Force, which he established during his first presidential term. The president did not specify which federal government structure the new body would join, how it would operate or what powers it would have.
The announcement came as governments face growing calls to consider stronger safety measures amid the rapid development of artificial intelligence systems.
Trump rejected calls to slow AI development, saying additional restrictions could weaken the United States’ position in its technological competition with China.
“We will not in any way hinder or stifle the development of this incredible industry,” Trump said. According to him, harmful use of AI can be prevented through existing criminal and civil laws.
Trump’s position contrasts with warnings from several industry leaders, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman. They have said that more powerful AI systems could have serious consequences without adequate safety measures.
Earlier this week, the US president described concerns about artificial intelligence as “fabricated” and said the country had sufficient regulatory authority over technology companies.
Trump has also described AI as a major economic opportunity. He said the technology could eventually account for up to 25% of US gross domestic product.
“We are leading China and the rest of the world, and I intend to keep it that way,” Trump emphasized.
