US President Donald Trump has opposed growing calls to slow the development of the artificial intelligence (AI) industry, saying it is more important for the United States to maintain its advantage over China.
Trump made the remarks to journalists at a golf course in Ireland on Sept. 13, a Sunday, describing some warnings about AI as exaggerated. He said he wanted the United States to remain the world’s leading power in the technology.
“We are leading China in AI. We are the most advanced country in the world and, frankly, I want to keep it that way. Because whoever wins in AI wins,” Trump said.
Asked about stricter regulation of AI companies or slowing the pace of development, Trump said certain safety mechanisms could be introduced. However, he opposed measures that could weaken US competitiveness and said some critics were raising concerns about scenarios that would not occur.
Warnings over AI safety grow
Trump’s comments came as debate intensified in the United States over risks posed by increasingly powerful AI systems. Researchers at Anthropic have said rapid development could create serious dangers for humanity in the future.
Anthropic Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei has called for a slower pace of development. He proposed establishing independent safety evaluators, closer cooperation among leading AI companies and increased international efforts to manage the technology’s risks.
OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman and Elon Musk have supported some parts of the proposal. Amodei has identified competition between the United States and China as one of the main factors preventing restrictions on AI development.
Jacob Cox, a former Anthropic researcher, also called for international cooperation, warning that an uncontrolled race between the two countries could increase the risks posed by increasingly autonomous AI systems.
Washington faces pressure over AI rules
The Trump administration has generally taken an industry-oriented approach to AI. Technology companies are playing an increasingly important role in the US economy and national security.
At the same time, the Pentagon has drawn attention to risks associated with Anthropic’s AI model. The situation has increased pressure on Washington to strengthen oversight.
The central issue in the dispute is how to balance technological leadership with safety. Trump believes slowing the pace of US development could give China a strategic advantage. Supporters of AI safety, however, say stronger safeguards should be introduced before the technology becomes even more powerful.
