The results of the US midterm elections have marked a historic milestone for Muslim representation in the country’s legislature.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports that Egyptian-American doctor and health official Abdul El-Sayed, a Senate candidate from Michigan, defeated his Republican rival Mike Rogers. He has made history as the first Muslim elected to the US Senate.
Muslim representation in the lower chamber of Congress has also expanded:
Incumbent members retain their seats: Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Lateefah Simon of California and Andre Carson of Indiana were re-elected and will continue serving.
Gaza volunteer elected to Congress: Adam Hamawy, who worked as a volunteer doctor in Gaza in 2024 and practices plastic surgery in Princeton, was elected to the House of Representatives from New Jersey. Hamawy is the first Muslim representative from the state elected to Congress.
New faces: New York candidate Darylisa Avila Chevalier also won her district and secured a seat. Vote counting in California candidate Aisha Wahab’s district is nearing completion, and she remains in the lead.
