Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto dismissed his chief of staff on Wednesday, a day after the official was arrested alongside two senior police officers on suspicion of illegally wiretapping the president, according to local media.

Listyo Sigit Prabowo and the two serving officers were detained on suspicion of tapping the phones of the president and other prominent figures between 2025 and 2026, the Jakarta Globe reported, according to Anadolu Agency.

State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said the alleged surveillance could have endangered the president’s safety and “threatened national interests.”

Listyo became Prabowo’s chief of staff last month after serving as national police chief for five years.

“This was, of course, carried out by certain rogue individuals, and we are also of the view that what was done may already fall into a category that can be considered an act tending toward treason,” Prasetyo told reporters in Jakarta.

Prabowo appointed Lt. Gen. Ariyo Windutomo as acting chief of staff “to ensure continuity.”

Prasetyo said the appointment followed the naming of several suspects in cases involving alleged illegal wiretapping, deletion of electronic evidence and unauthorized access to the communications of the head of state, other leaders and public figures.

The president had “once again” expressed profound concern about the developments, Prasetyo said.

Police identified the other two suspects as National Police Legal Division head Insp. Gen. Ahrie Sonta Nasution and Insp. Gen. Eko Hadi Santoso, a senior instructor at the National Police Education and Training Institute.
