Russian President Vladimir Putin held a series of high-level meetings ahead of the 18th BRICS summit in New Delhi, seeking to strengthen Moscow’s political and economic partnerships with countries in Africa and Asia.

Putin met separately with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The talks focused on expanding cooperation in trade, education, energy and technology.

During his meeting with Ramaphosa, Putin said relations between Moscow and Pretoria were developing steadily. The Russian leader highlighted growing trade and educational cooperation between the two countries and said scholarship opportunities for South African students had been expanded.

Ramaphosa welcomed the continuation of bilateral cooperation and said South Africa intended to participate actively in the Russia-Africa summit planned to take place in Moscow later this year. The leaders also discussed international issues, with Putin thanking South Africa for supporting several Russian initiatives at the United Nations.

Trade and major infrastructure projects were at the center of talks between Putin and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. The leaders noted that bilateral trade had exceeded $10 billion.
