Pakistan’s defense chief, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, has traveled to Tehran for talks, AnewZ reported. He was accompanied by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported the visit, citing a diplomatic source in Islamabad.
Munir was expected to meet senior Iranian officials, but the meetings had not taken place at the time of publication.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said the visit would focus mainly on strengthening bilateral ties and cooperation, as well as talks with the United States.
Pakistan has sought to mediate between Washington and Tehran since the conflict began in February. Previous discussions between Pakistani and Iranian leaders addressed preventing further escalation and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy shipping route.
Pakistan reaffirms defense support for Saudi Arabia
Pakistan army spokesman Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said Islamabad would continue providing Saudi Arabia with the support it needs to defend itself.
In an interview with Independent Arabia published on Sunday, October 18, Chaudhry described Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and the security of Islam’s two holy sites as “non-negotiable.”
He said the Mecca Joint Defense Alliance, bringing together Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, was purely defensive in nature. Chaudhry added that collective deterrence measures were already in place and that Pakistan would take the necessary steps to protect the kingdom’s security and territorial integrity.
Chaudhry also called for restraint and a negotiated settlement, warning that further escalation would not help ease regional concerns.
Pakistan and Qatar expand security cooperation
Pakistan and Qatar have agreed to expand cooperation between their interior ministries, according to a statement issued by Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior on Tuesday, October 20.
At a meeting in Doha, Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and his Qatari counterpart, Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, discussed internal security, regional developments and efforts to promote peace and stability.
The meeting followed Naqvi’s address at the Global Security Forum in Doha on Monday, October 19. He highlighted joint efforts by Pakistan and Qatar to encourage dialogue between Washington and Tehran.
Naqvi also praised Qatar’s diplomatic efforts, saying both countries were working together to prevent the conflict from spreading further and to save lives.
Pakistan’s diplomatic initiatives reflect its efforts to maintain ties with Iran while meeting its defense commitments to Saudi Arabia. Ongoing tensions are testing relations across the Middle East.
