Iran is reviewing the United States’ response to Tehran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran could respond in the coming days.
According to the IRNA news agency, Araghchi said talks were continuing and messages were being exchanged through mediators.
“The negotiating process is still ongoing, and messages are being conveyed through mediators,” Araghchi said.
Araghchi said Iran had submitted what is being called a “seven-day plan” and had received the US position.
Plan calls for the strait to reopen on the sixth day
Under the proposal, conveyed through Qatari mediation, the United States would take agreed steps during the first four or five days. Normal shipping could resume on the sixth day, with talks on a broader agreement beginning on the seventh.
Iran is seeking a halt to military operations, the release of its frozen assets, a easing of restrictions on its oil exports and an end to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports.
Strait of Hormuz is a key route for energy shipments
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the main routes for global energy shipments. Restrictions on the waterway have raised concerns for international shipping and oil markets.
Iran continues to restrict passage through the strait and says the United States must first fulfill its commitments under a memorandum of understanding on freedom of navigation signed in June. Disagreements over security measures have impeded progress toward an agreement.
The parties are currently communicating through mediators. Iran’s next response could affect whether the diplomatic initiative moves forward.
