Inter Miami’s Argentine forward Lionel Messi will temporarily leave the club’s camp next week to travel to Spain. According to ESPN, he will receive the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports.
The award was presented to Messi in June. The jury cited his sporting career and his charitable work to help children in difficult circumstances gain access to education and medical care.
Ceremony to take place on Oct. 22
The awards ceremony will be held on Thursday, Oct. 22, in Oviedo, Spain.
Inter Miami will visit the New York Red Bulls on Oct. 24 in the MLS regular season. The club’s coaching staff expects Messi to return in time for the match and take part.
The Princess of Asturias Awards are presented to individuals and organizations for achievements in fields including literature, social sciences, scientific and technical research, international cooperation and sports.
