New Zealand raised its volcanic alert level on Wednesday as volcanic ash continued to erupt at White Island, also known as Whakaari, Anadolu Agency reported.
“Earth Sciences New Zealand” said there was no threat to the mainland beyond a potentially noticeable sulphur smell and light ash fall, according to “Radio New Zealand”. The aviation colour code was raised to orange, or Level III.
Whakaari is an active andesite stratovolcano located 48 kilometres (29.8 miles) off the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island.
Ash could be seen around the active vent in the Main Crater, with a small amount rising in a column of steam and gas, “Earth Sciences New Zealand” said. The discharge was weak, and there was no evidence of an explosive eruption.
The activity could continue for weeks, the agency said, but a significant impact on the mainland remained very unlikely. Volcanic activity would have to increase significantly for that likelihood to rise.
