US first lady Melania Trump announced an agreement between Russia and Ukraine to establish a temporary ceasefire in the southern Ukrainian city of Oleshky, according to Anadolu Agency.
The localized truce is scheduled to begin on Oct. 29, the White House said. It is intended to allow humanitarian aid deliveries and help evacuate civilians who wish to leave.
“The situation in Oleshky is dire. Oleshky is a front-line war city on the brink of disaster. Oleshky’s remaining population is comprised primarily of elderly residents who urgently need medical attention, medicine, food, and clean water,” Melania Trump said in a statement.
She said residents had limited electricity, lived amid mined roads and faced regular military attacks. Trump added that without her intervention, bringing humanitarian aid into the city and evacuating elderly residents would have been impossible.
The White House said the first lady and her representative worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leaders to define the terms of the truce.
