US President Donald Trump is willing to offer Iran economic sanctions relief and release frozen funds in exchange for concrete progress on its nuclear programme, a US official told “Axios” and “CNN” on Monday.
Washington is conducting “positive and constructive” talks through mediators, “CNN” quoted the official as saying. The official stressed that negotiators would not conclude an agreement unless nuclear-related concerns were fully addressed.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Anadolu Agency, which reported the remarks.
Trump expects further negotiations
The potential diplomatic opening follows Trump’s rejection on Saturday of an Iranian proposal intended to ease tensions and reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz. He described Tehran’s conditions as “unacceptable” amid the seven-month war between Iran and the United States.
Trump said on Sunday that he expected additional negotiations with Tehran this week, claiming that Iranian officials had “overplayed” their hand during earlier talks.
