US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the United States had removed more oil from the Strait of Hormuz in recent days than “at any point in history.”
“You know, we took more oil out of the Hormuz Strait over the last couple of days than at any point in history,” Trump told reporters at the White House.
Asked whether Iran was preparing to surrender or make concessions, Trump said Tehran was “doing very poorly” and predicted that it would eventually give up.
“I don't know if they're going to give up yet, but they'll give up,” he said. “But they're doing very poorly.”
Trump says campaign targets Iran’s nuclear programme
Trump reiterated that the US campaign was intended to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.
The United States and Israel launched a war against Iran on Feb. 28. Tehran responded with missile and drone attacks across the region and effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important route for energy supplies.
Efforts continue to end conflict
Efforts to end the war have continued since a June memorandum aimed at securing a final peace agreement covering navigation through the strategic waterway and Iran’s nuclear programme.
