The Milli Majlis (National Assembly) has approved in its first reading a proposal to shorten the period that military personnel with academic degrees must serve in the rank of lieutenant.

The draft amendments to the laws on military service and military duty were discussed at today’s plenary session of parliament, Operative Information Center-OMM reports.

Under the proposal, the period in rank would be reduced by one year for officers who have completed a master’s degree or residency programme, or completed doctoral or adjunct studies and earned a corresponding academic degree, at the request of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces or other state bodies where military service is provided. The reduction would apply once for each of the specified levels of higher education.

The provisions governing the period of service in the military rank of lieutenant would also be updated.

Under the proposed rules, the period would be set at two years for personnel who graduate from specialised military educational institutions with five-year training programmes. It would be one year for flight crew in aviation and personnel serving on submarines, as well as in other cases determined by the relevant executive authority.

Following discussions, the bill was put to a vote and approved in its first reading.
