The adoption of laws governing artificial intelligence and social media has been proposed in Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis (National Assembly).
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Milli Majlis deputy Jeyhun Mammadov made the proposal during today’s first meeting of the parliament’s autumn session.
He said artificial intelligence and social media are rapidly becoming part of people’s lives:
“We are increasingly seeing how complicated it is to manage processes. From the standpoint of statehood, there are several issues that concern us greatly. We are particularly concerned about developments and discussions on social media, as well as deliberate external interference. Therefore, taking into account the proper use of artificial intelligence and specific security considerations, laws governing both artificial intelligence and social media need to be adopted.”
The deputy also said developments around the world require education reforms to be accelerated and the legislative framework to be improved and strengthened:
“In this regard, there is a particular need to review the law on education and prepare and adopt laws on higher education and distance education. In the future, a separate Education Code should also be prepared.”
Jeyhun Mammadov also said that adopting a law to protect national and moral values was necessary:
“We are witnessing that globalization is creating very serious threats and dangers to our national and moral values. Values are rapidly transforming around the world, and in this regard, I propose creating a legal framework to protect our national and moral values. At the same time, Azerbaijani family values are facing very serious threats and dangers. We are already observing a certain decline in family values. Therefore, I believe additional decisions and laws are needed to prevent these processes. If developments continue at this pace, the institution of the family in Azerbaijan could completely collapse in the future. That is why adopting a law could help prevent certain developments in the future.”
Artificial intelligence and social media legislation has become an increasingly important policy issue worldwide as governments seek to balance technological innovation, public safety, privacy and the protection of citizens from harmful or manipulative content.
