On March 5, 2026, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Yermek Kosherbayev, held a telephone conversation with the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, to discuss the recent escalation in the region.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing the MFA, Jeyhun Bayramov emphasized that the drone attacks carried out by the Islamic Republic of Iran against the territory of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan on March 5, which resulted in damage to civilian infrastructure and affected individuals, are a direct violation of Azerbaijan's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Foreign Minister informed his Kazakh counterpart that Azerbaijan has demanded a formal clarification, an explanation, and an official apology from the Islamic Republic of Iran. Furthermore, Baku has insisted that Tehran take immediate and necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future. Minister Kosherbayev expressed deep concern regarding these attacks and voiced hope that the situation would not escalate further.

The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic is an exclave of Azerbaijan, sharing borders with Armenia, Turkey, and Iran. Given its strategic location, any military provocation in this area significantly impacts regional security. This incident occurs amid a complex geopolitical landscape where Azerbaijan continues to prioritize the protection of its internationally recognized borders and the safety of its civilian population against external threats.
