The expected increase in the minimum wage next year is being viewed as a significant change in Azerbaijan’s social and economic life. Raising the minimum wage directly affects not only the lowest-paid workers but also the broader labour market, the public sector and the country’s average monthly wage.
Which categories of workers will be covered by the expected increase, and how could it affect the incomes of private-sector employees and Azerbaijan’s average monthly wage?
Milli Majlis member Vugar Bayramov said the increase would directly affect the country’s average monthly wage, Operative Information Center-OMM reports:
“In practice, raising the minimum wage will mean pay increases for more than 700,000 of our citizens. This is one of the main factors affecting growth in the average monthly wage. After the minimum wage is increased, the Cabinet of Ministers is expected to adopt a relevant decision on raising the salaries of citizens working in state institutions who are not civil servants, as well as other categories of workers. This decision will also lead to pay increases for employees who earn more than the minimum wage but do not have civil servant status.”
