US House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries formally asked for support on Wednesday for his candidacy to become the next speaker of the House of Representatives, following Democratic victories in the midterm elections, Anadolu Agency reported.
In a letter to incoming members of the 120th Congress, Jeffries celebrated the party’s electoral success, saying “America is back” and calling for a new political direction focused on affordability, accountability and American values.
“I write to humbly request your support in connection with my candidacy to serve as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives,” he wrote.
Jeffries said he would prioritise lowering living costs, reversing Medicaid cuts, restoring food assistance funding, extending Affordable Care Act tax credits and eliminating tariffs introduced during Donald Trump’s presidency. He also called for an end to the war in Iran, which he blamed for rising gasoline prices.
On accountability, Jeffries promised stronger congressional oversight of the Trump administration, measures to address corruption and price gouging, and a ban on members of Congress trading stocks.
He also stressed the need to protect voting rights, ensure equal treatment under the law and uphold the country’s tradition as a nation of immigrants.
Jeffries argued that Democrats had successfully challenged the Trump administration while in the minority and said the party must now deliver broader policy changes with control of Congress.
