Hubert Aiwanger, leader of Germany’s Free Voters party and Bavaria’s deputy premier and economy minister, was found dead at a hotel in Berlin, Anadolu Agency reported.
The 55-year-old was discovered on Wednesday at the “Neuer Fritz” hotel in Berlin-Mitte after missing the opening of his party’s new capital office because he was unwell, the Bild newspaper reported. Sources in the Bavarian state government and Berlin police confirmed his death to the newspaper.
The Tagesspiegel, citing police sources, reported that there was no indication of external involvement and that health reasons appeared to be the cause.
Aiwanger led the Free Voters in Bavaria from 2006 and the party at the federal level from 2010. He entered the Bavarian state parliament in 2008 and became economy minister and deputy premier after the 2018 election, serving in the government of Markus Söder’s Christian Social Union.
