Ganja basketball club has been handed a forfeit defeat in its FIBA Europe Cup group-stage match against Bulgaria’s Rilski Sportist. The tournament’s official schedule lists the result as 20-0 in favor of the Bulgarian team.
The Group C third-round game was due to be played on October 21 in Samokov, Bulgaria. The match did not take place because of problems related to the Azerbaijani team’s travel.
FIBA announced on October 19 that the game would not be played and that the matter had been referred to the sole judge of FIBA Europe. The organization did not specify the cause of the travel difficulties.
Following the forfeit result, Ganja is sixth and last in Group C. The team has one win and three losses. Its only victory in the tournament came on October 28, when it beat Portugal’s Sporting 69-67.
Ganja will play its next game against Romania’s Universitatea Craiova on November 4 in Romania. The top two teams in each group advance to the tournament’s second stage.
